The most important issue facing the world today is the intelligent management of earth's resources and finding new ways to power the world economy without causing irreversible damage to our environment. The board and management of Geysir Green Energy understand the importance of acting responsibly in the company's development efforts worldwide. They also understand the importance of being aware of your own local community and actively supporting the positive activities in our community.
SOCIETY - EDUCATION & EMPLOYMENT
Geothermal development has both environmentally and socioeconomically positive impact on communities. The closest example is the Geysir's part-owned subsidiary HS that has spurred an array of economic activity around its geothermal operation in Svartsengi. The plant and surrounding activity employs over 200 people in the community such as the adjacent Blue Lagoon spa that has become one of the most popular tourist places in Iceland. The plant also provides electricity and hot water for space heating to the neighboring municipalities at lower cost than most countries in Europe are experiencing.
Geysir grants sponsorships in the local community, with focus in the fields of environment, community support and education. Geysir is a proud founding shareholder of Keilir Atlantic Centre of Excellence, which is a new educational institution in Reykjanesbaer, Iceland providing unique, hands-on courses in mechatronics, geothermal science, engineering and management.
ENVIRONMENT - 105.000 TONS OF CARBON EMSSIONS SAVINGS A YEAR
Acting responsibly in the development and operations is a priority for the company, with a special emphasis on the environmental aspect. The joint venture geothermal operation in Xianyang city in China is having a very positive impact on the local community by reducing air pollution. The five geothermal heating stations in the city are displacing coal burning facilities for space heating. The operation offsets 105.000 tons of fossil fuel carbon emissions every year, equivalent to the emissions from 33.000 cars or planting of more than a million trees every year.
